God's Love is Forever

King David fully understood God’s Majesty, Mercy, and Grace, but mostly he understood God’s Love which is the all-encompassing, everlasting, and never wavering. The Psalmist expresses this love God has for us in Psalm 136.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever;
4 to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever;
5 to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever;
6 to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever;
7 to him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever;
8 the sun to rule over the day, for his steadfast love endures forever;
9 the moon and stars to rule over the night, for his steadfast love endures forever;
10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, for his steadfast love endures forever;
11 and brought Israel out from among them, for his steadfast love endures forever;
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever;
13 to him who divided the Red Sea in two, for his steadfast love endures forever;
14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it, for his steadfast love endures forever;
15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea, for his steadfast love endures forever;
16 to him who led his people through the wilderness, for his steadfast love endures forever;
17 to him who struck down great kings, for his steadfast love endures forever;
18 and killed mighty kings, for his steadfast love endures forever;
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites, for his steadfast love endures forever;
20 and Og, king of Bashan, for his steadfast love endures forever;
21 and gave their land as a heritage, for his steadfast love endures forever;
22 a heritage to Israel his servant, for his steadfast love endures forever.
23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever;
24 and rescued us from our foes, for his steadfast love endures forever;
25 he who gives food to all flesh, for his steadfast love endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.
The Exodus
This situation that is used to describe this love is the exodus from Egypt to the eventual establishment in the Promised Land. It is during this time that the Israelites learned the loyalty that God showed to the covenants that God made to the Patriarchs. This is where they learned the challenges that lie ahead and how God’s enduring, tough, and compassionate Love for His Chosen people would guide them and help them through life.  
Creator
In the first section the Psalmist speaks of the goodness of God and affirms that He is the mightiest above all others. This is proven in the second part through the description of creation where God created all things that bring forth life. We praise God with adoration for without these things we would not be here. God could have stopped at any moment and just left things the way they were but He created stars, sun, and moon, so that He could create us.
Compassionate
In verses 10-16, the Psalmist discusses the end of the Israelite slavery in Egypt. Here we see God’s compassion and grace at work. God’s compassion for the children of Jacob knows no bounds. He shows mercy on them by saving them from the plagues and making the way out of Egypt possible despite the odds that were against them. This section concentrates on the power of God that split the Sea of Reeds (or Red Sea) and made firm a separation from their captivity. God then leads them through trials and temptations (the wilderness) to get through to the Promised Land.
Mercy
God’s hand is strong and will protect through the evils that stand in the way of God’s plan in our lives. This is emphasized through the next section verses 17-22 where God made a way possible for the Israelites to go home.
Enduring Grace
The final section shows that God loves us no matter what. He is the loving parent, protector, provider of all things. This is His free gift to all who obey Him. His Grace is enough for us that we should be compelled to be as loyal to Him as He is towards us. His love is fixed in place, sturdy, unwavering, compassionate, tough, and steadfast.      
Why Steadfast
Steadfast is one of the many words used when translating the Hebrew word, hesed which is used in the original text. The word steadfast is a combination of stede (place), and fæst (firmly fixed). So why use this word to describe God’s Love for us? As we see in the previous paragraph, God’s Love has no bounds and is firmly fixed. It does not stand still but moves as the situation needs, much like a parent’s love for a child. The one thing that remains is that it is unconditional, firmly fixed on His creation. Our eyes and heart are fixed on the Father through our love for Him.
Our Response
Our love for God should never waver even though we know it will because of our nature. That is why God sent His Son as a true personification of His steadfast Mercy and Grace for us. Though we falter we have a Savior that is the true nature of God’s Mercy and Grace, Jesus Christ. He returned the Word to the world that we should follow the best we can. Our faith and trust in Jesus is proof of God’s undying love.
