Building Relationships Through God's Love

Scripture of the Week:

Psalm 92

Of David.

It is good to praise the LORD,
to sing hymns to Your name, O Most High,

To proclaim Your steadfast love at daybreak,
Your faithfulness each night

With a ten-stringed harp,
with voice and lyre together.

You have gladdened me by Your deeds, O LORD;
I shout for joy at Your handiwork.

How great are Your works, O LORD,
how very subtle Or “profound.” Your designs!

A brutish man cannot know,
a fool cannot understand this:

though the wicked sprout like grass,
though all evildoers blossom,
it is only that they may be destroyed forever.

But You are exalted, O LORD, for all time.
Surely, Your enemies, O LORD,
surely, Your enemies perish;
all evildoers are scattered.

You raise my horn high like that of a wild ox;
I am soaked in freshening oil.

I shall see the defeat of my watchful foes,
hear of the downfall of the wicked who beset me.

The righteous bloom like a date-palm;
they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon;

planted in the house of the LORD,
they flourish in the courts of our God.

In old age they still produce fruit;
they are full of sap and freshness,

attesting that the LORD is upright,
my rock, in whom there is no wrong.

The Problem of Melchizedek

1 Comment

Read Now

The Book of Hebrews was written to the Hellenized Jews who had forgotten many things. This made it easy for the writer (supposedly Paul) to convince them that Jesus could be King and Priest as in the Order of Melchizedek. Without proper understanding that this king/priest was basically a person who was grateful to Abraham and rewarded him for his bravery.

After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). And Melchizedek, king of Salem brought out bread and wine. And he blessed him and said,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.” Genesis 14:17-24

Melchizedek, Canaanite King and Priest to Their God
It is said that this king/priest was impressed by Abraham and celebrated with him. The kindness and humility of Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek for his kindness. He blessed Abraham through his Canaanite head of gods, El. He is a Noahide and not in Jacobs direct ancestry at all.

The Hebrews Issue

The writer of Hebrews could not find the genealogy of Melchizedek so he became immortal.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. Hebrews 7:1-3

Making this person immortal fits right with the narrative that the writer was prescribing while changing the Levitical priesthood over to a priesthood of a dead Canaanite god.

Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. Hebrews 7:11-14

God separated the line of priests from the line of kings on purpose. The Pharaohs of Egypt were considered gods and they had priests but the Pharaoh was the supreme ruler who chose how to worship. Yes, Israel had that issue later on down the line after David and Solomon but the truth be told, God was still worshipped even when other gods were introduced. The kings who disobeyed had a hard time ruling and ended tragically but God kept his promise.

The Eternal King/Priest

This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. Hebrews 7:15-16

By placing Jesus in the order of Melchizedek, the writer makes him an immortal pagan priest. Removing the Law of God given to Moses. At least we still have the Noahide Laws of which all humankind is bound by.

For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. Hebrews 7:18-19

The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:23-25

What Conclusions Can We Draw From This?

A pagan king/priest with no genealogy and only talked about for 8 verses in a spot that shows us Abrahams humility and strength in leadership and faith was made into an eternal priest of whom  the writer puts Jesus in the line of this king/priest to make the problem of his genealogy a moot point.

However, this changes the genealogy completely. The Davidic portion of the genealogy spoken in Matthew places Jesus in the line that was forbidden to ever sit on the seat of David. The tribal line is actually attributed to the father of the child. The only thing Jewish about Jesus is that he was born to a Jewish mother who happens to be in the line of David.

The Book of Hebrews has many discrepancies that can be easily found by anyone who studies Scripture and looks into the referenced Scripture. Just remember, the word, Scripture, only alludes to the Hebrew Bible. The New Testament is writings that describe the life of Jesus and letters written to churches.

Stay in the Study of the Word and you will see the truth of God.
